Careers

This brief synthesis is based on 80,000 Hours’ advice on high-impact careers.

Choosing a promising career path depends on many factors, such as your situation, skills, and values. The following steps can help you explore promising areas:

  1. Choose the 2-4 global problems you think are most pressing. If you are interested in sustainability, our research areas may be a good starting point.

  2. Identify key bottlenecks to tackle those problems (e.g., skills, a political change, money).

  3. Identify career paths that best address those bottlenecks. Consider the following categories: research, government and policy, work at effective non-profits, or apply an unusual strength to a needed niche. If you think none of these categories is a great fit for you and if you have an unusually good fit for a very high-earning career, you may consider earning to give. Besides, see other career reviews.

  4. Focus on the options where you have the best personal fit.

  5. Consider making quantitative estimates of the impact of your top options.

  6. Start to narrow down, or if there are no suitable options, go back to the start.
